In summer, this tall garden phlox sends up sturdy stems topped with showy clusters of rich magenta-violet blooms. It is a favorite for pollinator gardens, drawing butterflies and hummingbirds, and the flowers are excellent for cutting so you can bring the color indoors.

Give your phlox consistently moist, well-drained soil for best performance. Full sun is ideal, but part shade is also workable, especially in hotter climates. Space plants to allow good air circulation, water at the base when possible, and keep mulch pulled back from the crowns to help the foliage stay clean.

After the main flush, you can snip off spent flower clusters to encourage a tidier plant and extend the display. In early spring, cut back old stems to make room for fresh growth, and divide mature clumps every few years if the center begins to thin.
