Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple' is a vigorous selection of creeping phlox that spreads by stolons to form a soft, leafy groundcover. In spring, it sends up short flowering stems above the foliage mat, carrying clusters of fragrant purple-blue flowers that brighten shady edges and woodland-style beds.

Plant it where you want a spreading carpet between perennials, at the front of borders, in rock gardens, or along paths. It performs best in full sun to part shade, and it can handle brighter shade where many flowering groundcovers struggle to bloom well.

Give it humus-rich, well-drained soil and steady moisture, especially in its first season while it establishes. After it is rooted in, it is more tolerant of occasional dry spells, though it looks best with even moisture. A light layer of mulch or leaf mold helps conserve moisture and keeps the soil cool.

Maintenance is simple: trim or lightly shear after flowering to encourage fresh growth and keep the planting neat. Good air circulation helps reduce powdery mildew issues in humid weather. Deer tend to avoid it, and the fragrant blooms are a welcome early-season nectar source in the garden.
