Place it where it will receive full sun to part sun. In hotter climates, aim for morning sun with some afternoon protection to help prevent leaf scorch. Good airflow and consistent moisture are important for healthy foliage and strong bud set for next season.

Plant in well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Water deeply after planting, then keep the root zone evenly moist (not soggy) while it establishes. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch helps hold moisture, protect shallow roots, and keep soil temperatures steady; keep mulch a couple inches back from the stem.

Prune only as needed, and do it right after flowering to maintain its dense shape. Feed lightly with an acid-loving plant fertilizer in early spring if your soil is lean, and avoid heavy fertilizing late in the season so new growth can harden off before winter.
