Plant it where it receives part shade to shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in many gardens, and full shade works well for maintaining the bluest foliage. In midsummer, pale lavender flowers rise above the foliage on taller scapes, adding a soft seasonal accent without taking away from the foliage display.

For best performance, give it moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water during dry spells, especially while the plant is establishing and during hot summer weather. A light layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and keeps roots cool. In spring, remove last season's foliage before new growth emerges, and top-dress with compost if needed.
