Hosta × 'Blue Mouse Ears' is a miniature hosta prized for its tight, mounded habit and thick, rounded blue-green leaves. It is an excellent choice when you want crisp texture and color at the front of a shade border, along a path, or tucked into a shady rock garden.
Plant it in part shade to full shade, where the foliage stays its best and the soil remains evenly moist. In midsummer, slender scapes rise above the leaves with soft lavender, bell-like flowers. Give it rich, loamy soil with added organic matter and water during dry spells, especially in summer heat.
Keep the planting area mulched to conserve moisture and reduce splashing onto the leaves. Clean up tired foliage at season's end and watch for slugs and snails, which can be more active during cool, damp weather. The thick leaf texture of this cultivar can help reduce cosmetic feeding damage compared with thinner-leaved types.
Over time, the clump slowly expands into a neat little mound. If it becomes crowded, you can divide it in spring as new growth emerges or in early fall, then replant divisions at the same depth. With consistent moisture and shade, this compact hosta stays tidy and long-lived.
