Plantain Lily 'Tambourine' (Hosta × 'Tambourine') is grown for its bold, heart-shaped foliage and bright, creamy white margins that light up shaded beds. You can use it to create a full, mounded clump that looks good from spring until frost, with lavender flowers rising above the leaves in summer.
Give it partial shade to full shade for best leaf color and a clean look. Morning sun is usually fine, but avoid hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the light leaf edges. Pair it with ferns, astilbe, and other shade perennials to build an easy, layered planting.
Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly during the first season so it roots in well. After it is established, keep the soil evenly moist during dry spells for the best size and leaf quality. A spring topdressing of compost is often enough, but a balanced, slow-release fertilizer can be used if your soil is lean.
At maturity, this hosta typically reaches about 15-20 inches tall and can spread 40-48 inches wide, so allow space for the clump to fill in. Divide in early spring or after flowering if you want to propagate it or refresh an older planting. Watch for slugs and snails in damp shade and protect new growth as needed.
