Bring refined spring color to shaded beds with Rhododendron yak. 'Prince' (Yak Rhododendron 'Prince'), a compact broadleaf evergreen rhododendron prized for its tidy, rounded habit and soft pink flower trusses in spring.
Site your plant where it gets morning sun with afternoon shade, or bright dappled light beneath high tree canopy. Shelter from harsh winter winds and hot late-day sun to help prevent leaf scorch and bud damage. In cooler-summer climates it can take more sun, but consistent moisture is still important.
Plant in acidic, organic-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Work in pine bark fines or leaf mold to boost drainage and humus, and keep the root zone evenly moist (never soggy). A 2-3 inch mulch layer helps conserve water and keeps roots cool; keep mulch a few inches back from the stem.
Expect a mature size around 24-36 inches tall, with a broader spread over time. After flowering, you can remove spent trusses and do light shaping, but avoid heavy pruning unless needed. Feed lightly in spring with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving shrubs, and water deeply during dry spells so the shallow roots never dry out completely.
