Site your plant where it gets morning sun with afternoon shade, or bright dappled light beneath high tree canopy. Shelter from harsh winter winds and hot late-day sun to help prevent leaf scorch and bud damage. In cooler-summer climates it can take more sun, but consistent moisture is still important.

Plant in acidic, organic-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Work in pine bark fines or leaf mold to boost drainage and humus, and keep the root zone evenly moist (never soggy). A 2-3 inch mulch layer helps conserve water and keeps roots cool; keep mulch a few inches back from the stem.
