Hosta fortunei 'Aureomarginata' (Hosta 'Aureomarginata') is a classic shade perennial grown for bold foliage and a neat, mounded habit. Its medium green leaves are edged in golden yellow, giving you bright color even in low-light areas. In midsummer, flower scapes rise above the foliage with lavender blooms that add height and seasonal interest.
Plant it where you can enjoy the leaf color up close: along shady paths, at the front of a woodland bed, or as a repeating border plant. At maturity it forms a tidy clump about 20-24 inches tall, and it fills in gradually to make a substantial mound without becoming unruly.
Give it part shade to full shade for best leaf quality. Morning sun is usually easier on the foliage than hot afternoon sun. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during summer dry spells, and top-dress with compost or leaf mold to maintain a rich, loamy texture. A 2-3 inch mulch layer helps conserve moisture and keeps roots cool.
For routine care, remove spent flower stalks if you prefer a cleaner look, and cut back dead foliage after frost. Divide mature clumps in spring or early fall if you want to propagate or refresh crowded plants. Watch for slug and snail damage and protect new growth, and use deterrents where deer pressure is high.
