Hosta × 'Gold Standard' (hosta; also sold as Hosta fortunei 'Gold Standard') is a classic, medium-to-large hosta grown mainly for its colorful foliage. You get a sturdy mound of broad, textured leaves with bright golden centers and deep green margins that looks fresh from spring into fall.
In summer, slender scapes rise above the leaves with soft lavender, funnel-shaped flowers. The blooms add gentle color and can draw hummingbirds, but the foliage remains the main show through the season.
For best results, plant in part shade to full shade. Morning sun or dappled light helps bring out the golden tones, while hot afternoon sun can stress the leaves. Grow it in evenly moist, organically rich, well-drained soil; keep watering consistent, especially during dry spells, so the plant keeps good size and color.
Expect a mature clump about 24-36 inches tall (including flower scapes) and roughly 24-36 inches wide. Clean up old foliage as it fades in fall, and divide the clump in spring or early fall if it becomes crowded. Watch for slugs and snails, and protect new growth where deer or rabbits browse. Use it to brighten shady borders, woodland gardens, and mass plantings.
