Make a dramatic statement in the shade with Hosta × 'Shadowland(R) Wu-La-La', a giant hosta grown for its oversized, thick, puckered blue-green leaves edged with a bright apple-green margin. As the clump matures it becomes an impressive mound that brings structure and color contrast from spring through frost.
At maturity, expect foliage to reach about 36-48 inches tall, with flower scapes rising to around 48 inches. Allow plenty of room: the plant can spread 60-72 inches wide, so it works best as a specimen, focal point, or a generous drift in a large shade border.
Site it in part shade to shade for best performance. Morning sun is usually fine, but hot afternoon sun can scorch the foliage. Plant in moist, well-drained, organically enriched soil, and water during dry spells to keep growth steady. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and keeps roots cool.
In early to mid-summer, violet-purple flowers appear above the foliage, adding seasonal interest. Remove spent flower stalks if you prefer a tidier look, and clean up old foliage after frost. Divide in spring or early fall if you want to propagate or rejuvenate an older clump.
