Hydrangea paniculata 'Little Hottie® Panicle Hydrangea' is a compact panicle hydrangea you can use when you want big-season bloom without a giant shrub. You get upright stems and large, conical flower panicles that open in summer and hold well into fall, giving you weeks of color and great cut stems. Because panicle hydrangeas bloom on the current season's growth, you can count on flowers even after cold winters.
Plant it in full sun to part shade. In hotter areas, give your plant afternoon shade to reduce stress, and keep the soil evenly moist. Aim for rich, well-drained soil, and mulch the root zone to help hold moisture and keep roots cool. Water deeply during establishment and during dry spells, especially when grown in full sun.
For pruning, you have options. You can simply remove winter damage and lightly shape in late winter or early spring, or you can prune more firmly to encourage vigorous new shoots and larger flower panicles. Since blooms form on new wood, pruning at this time will not eliminate the season's flowers. Space plants to allow airflow and expect a mature size of roughly 3-5 feet tall and about as wide.
Use this shrub as a foundation accent, in mixed borders, or in groups for a soft hedge effect. The dried flower heads can be left for winter interest, then trimmed off when you do your late-winter cleanup.
