Spring Sizzle is a standout panicle hydrangea that brings big, cone-shaped blooms and strong stems to your landscape. Botanically known as Hydrangea paniculata 'Spring Sizzle', it starts flowering early in summer, opening creamy white and then quickly shifting into deeper red tones as the season warms.
Place your plant where it will get full sun to part shade. In most gardens, morning sun with afternoon shade helps maintain the best flower color and keeps the shrub looking fresh through summer. Provide a rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, and mulch to hold moisture and moderate soil temperature.
Water consistently during establishment and during hot, dry stretches. Once rooted in, it is more forgiving, but you will get the most reliable flowering and the best-looking foliage when the soil stays evenly moist (never soggy). Feed lightly in early spring if your soil is lean, and avoid heavy nitrogen that can push lots of leafy growth at the expense of blooms.
Spring Sizzle blooms on new wood, so you can prune in late winter or very early spring before growth begins. Remove dead or crossing stems and shorten branches as needed to keep a tidy, dense shape. As it matures to about 48-72 inches tall, it also spreads to fill space, making it a great choice for foundation plantings, hedges, mixed borders, and as a focal shrub where you want long-lasting summer interest.
