Give Rosa 'White Dawn' a place to climb and it will reward you with elegant, creamy-white flowers and a classic rose look. This large-flowered climbing rose is ideal for training on an arbor, trellis, pergola, or fence, where the long canes can be tied in and fanned out to cover your structure with bloom. Expect a mature size of about 96-144 inches tall, with a broad footprint when fully trained (plan on several feet of width, and more when spread along supports).
Plant in full sun for the best flowering and overall performance. Choose a spot with fertile, well-drained soil; amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage and root growth. Water deeply after planting, then keep soil evenly moist during establishment. Once established, water when the top few inches of soil dry, soaking the root zone rather than sprinkling the foliage. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and keeps roots cooler in summer and more protected in winter.
Because this is a climber, support and training matter as much as pruning. Tie canes to wires, a trellis, or a fence as they grow, spacing them out to increase air flow and light penetration. Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and to shape the plant. After flowering flushes, you can lightly trim and deadhead to encourage repeat bloom. Feed in spring and again after the first heavy flush with a balanced rose fertilizer or compost, following label directions. In colder areas within its range (USDA Zones 5-9), add extra mulch around the base in late fall for added winter protection.
